Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is NATA accreditation?

NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) is the national accreditation body for Australia. NATA accreditation is granted to an organisation that has demonstrated competence to perform specific types of testing, inspection, calibration or other related activities.

Once accredited, calibration laboratories receive an official scope of accreditation clearly identifying the services and capabilities for which they can provide NATA certification. Although the lab may be able to calibrate a wider range of equipment than the NATA scope of accreditation covers, it can only issue NATA accredited reports for instruments whose functions, ranges and uncertainties fall within this scope.

Why is NATA calibration important?

NATA accredited calibration ensures that your measurement instruments are calibrated to recognised reference standards using appropriate test methods - MSA, ISO, IEC, AS/NZS, Euramet, etc. This provides confidence in the accuracy and reliability of your measurements, which is crucial for quality control, regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

How often should instruments be calibrated?

Calibration frequency depends on several factors such as manufacturer’s recommendations, relevant local standards, calibration certificate validity or the user’s own requirements. NATA calibration certificates are valid for one year from the date of issue so this is generally the default calibration interval for equipment that’s in regular use.

What devices or instruments require regular calibration?

In theory, any device that provides measurements to a stated degree of accuracy can be calibrated. Meaningful calibration results are essential however, and calibration should ideally be performed using a reference standard of at least 3 to 5 times greater accuracy than the device under test.

Transtek can provide NATA calibration for a huge range of instruments. However, our most common NATA calibration requirements include:

What documentation will I receive after calibration?

A comprehensive NATA calibration certificate will be provided by the laboratory. NATA certification provides information about the calibration process and results, and is evidence that your instrument has been calibrated in accordance with NATA standards. The certificate also confirms unbroken traceability chains for instruments used in the calibration process along with their measurement uncertainties.

What is the turnaround time for a calibration service?

Our standard turnaround time for calibration services is typically 1-2 weeks from the receipt of your instrument. However, this timeframe can vary depending on the complexity of calibration work required and the current workload of the laboratory. We will keep you up to date as your device(s) move through the calibration process.

How do I proceed with a Transtek calibration service?

To request a calibration service, simply complete and submit the RMA (Return Material Authorisation) form on our website here. Once we receive your completed form, we will provide an RMA reference number and details of how to send your device(s) to us for calibration.
